Imamiyah Belief in Tawhid
Mohammad Biabani Oskoui
Abstract:   (14 Views)
Objective: This text outlines the foundational Imami (Twelver Shia) beliefs concerning Islamic Monotheism (Tawhid), as articulated by Sheikh Saduq.
Divine Uniqueness: It emphasizes that God is One (Wahid) and Unique (Ahad), possessing no numerical counterpart, peer, or similarity to creation. God exists entirely beyond the comprehension of human imagination, and any entity conceptualized by the human mind is inherently a created being.
Affirmative and Negative Attributes: The commentary details God's affirmative attributes—such as being Eternal (Qadim), All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Living (Hayy), Self-Sustaining (Qayyum), and Self-Sufficient (Ghani)—while clarifying that these do not function like human faculties. It strictly negates physical and material properties, confirming God is not described by substance (Jawhar), body (Jism), form, accident, space, or time.
Theological Boundaries: The Imami framework posits that God exists outside the two extreme boundaries of nullification (Ibtal) and anthropomorphism (Tashbih).
Interpretation of Metaphors: The text provides an interpretive guide for allegorical Quranic verses (Mutashabihat). It asserts that physical attributions to God—such as His "Face," "Hand," or "Shin"—are metaphorical expressions denoting His religion, power, and the severity of His judgment, respectively. Similarly, attributing actions like "scheming," "mocking," or "forgetting" to God refers to the divine punishment and natural consequences returning to disobedient humans, not literal divine actions.

Keywords: Imami Belief, Monotheism (Tawhid), Sheikh Saduq, Divine Attributes, Anthropomorphism (Tashbih), Quranic Metaphors.
