Foundations of ethics from the perspective of the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them)

Attaining moral virtues is possible through two ways: the divine way and the human way. In the divine way, the key and gateway to acquiring good morals is the knowledge of Allah and the path to reaching the divine bestowal of knowledge of God Himself. This path, unlike the human way, definitely produces results and is accessible to all. According to the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), the influence of external factors on morality, although real, does not affect a person’s free will; because on one side, the existence of power and choice is influenced by all other factors, as the complete divine power dominates and overcomes all human voluntary actions. However, this divine dominance does not negate human free will; human voluntary actions are also preserved under the influence of divine power. Hence, power and ownership belong to God, and this is the meaning of “the combination of the two commands” (al-amrayn). Considering what has been said, the gateways of knowledge in the field of morality open through: spiritual exercises, struggles, divine support and deprivations, trials, and choices. |
