This text explores the conceptual evolution of religion and its sanctity, focusing on the critical distinction between social and intrinsic sanctity in the context of "spiritualities without God." It reviews the historical development of the concept of religion in Western thought, contrasting substantive definitions with functionalist perspectives. The article argues that social sanctity often arises from rituals, institutional functions, taboos, and exaggerations, which can lead to a rejection of religion when questioned. In contrast, intrinsic sanctity is grounded in human creation (Fitrah), rationality, and free will. It concludes that the true realization of religion's intrinsic sanctity and its correct social application requires divine guidance through an infallible, empowered leader (Imam) alongside the Quran.
