A Study of Innate Cognition from the Perspective of Ayatollah Morvarid

One of the most fundamental topics in religious epistemology is the issue of humanity’s innate recognition of Allah. In the school of Khurasan’s teachings, particularly in the thought of Ayatollah Mirza Hasan Ali Morvarid, the recognition of Allah is considered an innate and constitutive matter, not an acquired or theoretical one. In Arabic, fitrat (innate disposition) means primordial creation, and in the Holy Quran, it is presented as a divine truth that Allah has ingrained in human nature: (Surah Rum 30:30) “The nature of Allah, with which He has created mankind.” Based on verses and narrations, this fitrat is the essence of tawhid (monotheism) and has been established in the human soul since the divine covenant, remaining unchangeable. In contrast, recognition through verses, theoretical understanding, and argumentation via intellect and senses leads to affirmation, not direct witnessing. In his view, the Prophets and divine saints are commissioned to remind and awaken this inherent innate recognition. Therefore, the divine fitrat is considered the source of religious conscience and the foundation of responsibility towards Allah. |
