The status and credibility of Shia Traditions (Hadith)

Traditions (Hadith) is one of the necessities of religion because the Holy Quran contains general statements that must be elaborated upon. If we were to rely solely on the Holy Quran, many religious rulings, instructions, and subjects would remain unknown to us. For example: In the Noble Quran, there are repeated verses regarding prayer and establishing it. But how should the prayer be performed? What are its components? How many units (rak‘ah) does it have? These details are not mentioned. Or regarding zakāt, the Quran says, ‘And establish prayer and give zakāt’. But this is a general statement, and its details are clarified in the narrations like what is the threshold (nisāb) for zakāt? To which items does zakāt apply? To whom must zakāt be given? Who must not receive zakāt? From whom is zakāt to be collected? and many other issues, for which we have mentioned just these two as examples. There is almost consensus between the Sunnis and the Shias that we are in need of traditions. The Sunnis also claim that they follow the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.), considering his methods and traditions. The Shia also use the same Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (s.a.wa.), along with the traditions of the Pure Imams (a.s.), which serve to explain and clarify those generalities and concise matters found in Quran. |
