due to the Qur'an’s concise nature, there is a need for interpretation. The prophet Muhammad is the first interpreter, who was followed by the Ahl al-Bayt. This essay gives a brief account of teaching and also understanding the Qur'an in the time of the prophet. There are 3 ways to this purpose as the historical evidences show which are: 1. Ismā (hearing) 2. Iqrā (recitation) and 3. The System of Privileging by the Qur'an.
