The Role of Mothers in Shaping the Event of ‘Ashura

The fate of a person is closely linked to various factors such as the family environment, social contexts, and especially the mother’s upbringing. The first individual from whom a child is influenced in their emotional and personality development is the mother; she is considered the foundation of the child’s initial educational experiences in their mind and psyche. In other words, the mother’s lap can be regarded as the first school of humanity. The faith, piety, inner purity, and good character of the mother on one hand, and her moral deviation or personality weakness on the other, play a fundamental role in shaping the character and value system of the child. In Islamic teachings, the mother’s role in raising a human being is not limited to the childhood or apparent life of the child, but also includes the period before birth and the spiritual and mental preparations of the mother for accepting the responsibility of motherhood. Based on this perspective, a mother who desires to nurture a noble human endowed with moral virtues must embark on a path of self-improvement and purification before the birth of her child, so that the groundwork for raising a child with human and spiritual perfections is established. The great event of ‘Ᾱshūrā is one of the clearest historical evidences of the profound impact of maternal upbringing in shaping divine personalities. The mothers of the front line of Imam Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) raised children based on faith, insight, and religious zeal, who embodied freedom, dignity, courage, and loyalty to the truth. Examining the conduct of these mothers shows that motherhood in the Ḥusayni school is not merely a biological or emotional duty, but a divine mission in transmitting monotheistic and justice-oriented values to future generations.
