Recognizing the political-religious ideology of the forces that opposed the uprising of Imam Ḥusayn (a.s.) and contributed in various ways to its defeat is among the crucial subjects that can illuminate this highly sensitive period in the history of Shiism. This article, through presenting certain evidence and indications, demonstrates the dominance of ‘Uthmaniyyah (‘Uthman-oriented) thought among those forces—both in Kufa and in Karbala—and reveals that equating the Kufis with being Shia is a historical fallacy. Some researchers, in their writings and discussions, have promoted this misconception and, by condemning the Shia (the Imamiyyah “Rafizah”) as the sole cause of the tragedy of Karbala, have sought to question the legitimacy of mourning rituals held on the Day of ‘Ᾱshūrā.
The paper defines the concept of ‘Uthmaniyyah and its criteria to identify those who adhered to this ideology. It also explores the factors and circumstances that fostered its growth and spread in Kufa, as well as the reflection of ‘Uthmaniyyah thought in both Kufa and Karbala and its dominance over the forces that opposed Imam Ḥusayn’s (a.s.) uprising.
